Steven Thirkell’s journey, shaped by a lifelong passion for engineering, spans global rail projects and cutting-edge digital innovation to deliver transformative, sustainable transport solutions in Australia.
A legacy of passion and precision
My early exposure to engineering was profoundly shaped by my father’s mechanical tinkering and my grandfather’s service in the British Airforce. These experiences ignited my passion for practical problem-solving and complex systems. Growing up in this environment, I developed a keen interest in rail signaling, where I could apply my love for intricate and impactful work.
From global experience to local impact
With over 20 years of international experience spanning the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, I’ve had the privilege of working on significant projects such as the Kingsgrove to Revesby Quadruplication (K2RQ), the City Rail Link in Auckland, and the Sydney Metro project with Siemens. Being able to look at a completed project and say to my children, "I worked on that," fills me with immense pride.
Moving to Australia has been a significant milestone in my career. And now to have the chance to work on one of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects – the Cross River Rail and ETCS L2 projects in South East Queensland, especially with the exciting prospects leading up to the Brisbane Olympics, is incredibly fulfilling.
Driving change
We are integrating proven technologies from around the world into the Australian context, making the shift from conventional signaling practices to new digital signaling and train control systems. Education and collaboration are key to a successful transition since it’s more of a people than a technology project. It’s essential to engage train crews, network control officers, maintenance teams and engineers, ensuring that the transition is smooth and effective.
Harnessing digital technologies
What excites me most about my role at Hitachi Rail is the opportunity to work with cutting-edge digital signaling and train control technologies that will redefine rail transport. Rail is one of the cleanest modes of transport, and advancing our digital capabilities will enhance its efficiency and reliability. The potential to contribute to a rail network that supports Australia’s sustainability goals while reducing reliance on cars and planes is a major driving force for me.
Advocating a collaborative approach
I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and the benefits of an alliance model which we have here in South East Queensland over traditional Design & Construct methods. In an alliance model, all parties work towards the same goal, sharing both the challenges and rewards. This collaborative approach not only improves project efficiency but also helps build strong relationships with stakeholders, from engineers to end-users.
Looking ahead
I am really motivated by the potential of new technological advancements and their promise for Australia’s rail network. The innovations we are implementing offer a bright future for rail transport in the country. I am eager to leverage my experience to contribute to these transformative projects and drive forward-thinking solutions in rail technology.
