Foreword on Enterprise Risk

In order to be the leading integrated transport provider delivering innovative solutions and being a trusted partner for our stakeholders, we at Hitachi Rail need to understand, analyse and manage the spectrum of principal risks faced by the Group, and exploit the opportunities generated by our businesses in our core markets.

Risks are inherent in our business activities and can relate to strategic threats, financial concerns, operational issues, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

We define risk as the “effect of uncertainty on objectives”. An effect may be positive, negative or a deviation from the expected.

Our success as an organisation depends on our ability to identify and manage risks in relation to both our strategy and operations.

The aim of Hitachi Rail’s Risk Management Framework is to integrate risk management activities throughout the organisation to achieve the following benefits:

Our risk management approach is based on the globally accepted COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organisations of the Treadway Commission) “Enterprise Risk Management – Integrating Strategy with Performance © 2017”. Our processes additionally align to ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) Standard 31000.

Our risk management process aims for early identification and evaluation of, and response regarding, risks and opportunities that could materially affect the achievement of our strategic, operational, and financial objectives.
