Hitachi Rail

Health and Wellbeing

The Five Pillars of Wellbeing

Human wellbeing is influenced by a wide range of factors in both our personal and work life. At Hitachi Rail, we address this by offering an array of benefits to our people. Depending on location these can include: private medical insurance for all new employees, flexible working options – depending on the nature of role, competitive employer pension contributions and life assurance, a full suite of optional additional benefits via salary sacrifice including buy/ sell holidays, income protection, gym discounts and more - plus additional access to healthcare screening and services

But in a constantly evolving and changing world, where workforce is becoming more diverse, we know we have to do more and support more. Hence our BeWell framework highlights five areas where we can make a difference to our people’s wellbeing.

Our Wellbeing Ambition

At Hitachi Rail we're committed to the wellbeing of all our people so we can be at our best wherever we are and whatever we're doing.

Physically Well

Providing people with the information and facilities that help them to take care of their physical wellbeing.

Mentally Well

Valued and Included

Creating an environment where everyone feels recognised, listened to and part of a team.

Financially Well

Providing information and support for people to understand and plan their finances.

Learning and Growing

Creating an environment where everyone has opportunities to learn new skills and develop their careers.

Our Global Wellbeing Programmes

A global framework for local delivery, BeWell provides a flexible, company-wide wellbeing approach to help our sites create their own wellbeing plans.

BeWell is not a one-off initiative; it is an ongoing commitment to improve the wellbeing culture in Hitachi Rail.

Our leaders are committed to creating this positive wellbeing culture.

In Australia we encourage our employees to be active through several initiatives. The 10,000 steps challenge is a popular fitness challenge that encourages people to walk 10,000 steps per day. The challenge is based on the idea that walking 10,000 steps is a healthy amount of daily activity. On average, more than 60 staff participate from each office. We also take part in Bridge to Brisbane - a 10km fun run/walk held annually in Brisbane, Australia. It is one of the largest fun runs in Queensland.

Our team offer training to support those going through the menopause themselves, and also for anyone supporting someone else. These sessions provide support, raise awareness and break down taboos around the menopause. Monthly meetings take place as a support network, alongside an annual campaign across the business, and smaller campaigns for local awareness. We are currently working towards gaining menopause friendly employer accreditation for the UK business.

The Va.Bene project offers employees across Italy a wide range of support and services to aid their wellbeing in the workplace. This includes 24/7 wellbeing assistance through counselling for employees and their family members by phone, face to face meetings, video calls and an online platform. It also offers legal and financial support, monthly wellbeing newsletters, educational webinars around key subjects such as parenthood and life changes, private medical insurance, discounted gym memberships, alongside a Recreational Workers' Welfare Club (CRAL) available in each site, with the scope to promote, organise and coordinate cultural, recreational and sports initiatives for workers.

In the UK we have launched the ManBassador Programme - an initiative delivered by ManHealth and curated by Our Minds Work that trains male employees to become wellbeing advocates at work, giving men the space and support they need to get help. One in five British men die before the age of 65 due to preventable health problems such as heart disease and cancer of the bowel, lung or prostate. Mental health problems present just as high a risk– with 75% of all deaths by suicide in the UK attributed to men. Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 50.

Men often suffer in silence, ashamed to seek support, troubled by stigma and often frightened of receiving a diagnosis. Whether it’s through poor physical or mental health, men in the UK workforce are suffering – so this workplace wellbeing initiative provides support for both mental and physical health in men from all walks of life.
