Hitachi Rail

Turin Tram

The new tram railway platform developed in Italy by Hitachi Rail is the evolution of the previous Sirio tram, and introduces innovative technologies to support performance and reliability of commercial service.

The 28-metres trams will offer a range of innovations ensuring a unique travel experience:

- Bright environment and full immersion in the outside urban landscape thanks to the wide glass windows and the transparency of lateral parts of the roof of the vehicle.

- Lighting and conditioning systems evenly distributed along the compartments to allow maximum comfort to the passengers.

- Handrails and hanging hand grips placed throughout the vehicle.

- Wide standing and passing areas and two dedicated areas to ease access for people with reduced mobility and information to passengers about the line thanks to external displays placed on the side and at both ends of the tram, at an ideal height to be clearly visible - also to passengers on wheelchairs.

The tram has essential and streamlined sides as well as a dynamic and modern front-end ensuring maximum visibility for the driver and the particular shape of the vehicle minimises the impact of the volume of the entire tram in the urban context in which it operates.

The livery will feature the two colours of the City, yellow and blue, in consistency with those of the new GTT bus fleet.

Contracts

Hitachi Rail and GTT (Gruppo Torinese Trasporti S.p.A.) signed the framework agreement for the production of the new trams for the City of Turin in May 2020. The framework agreement includes the supply of 70 new trams and a 4.5 year warranty.

The contract has been split into two tranches: the first one includes the supply of 30 vehicles.

The new Hitachi Rail trams will be delivered starting from winter 2022 and will be produced in Italy in the factories in Naples, Pistoia and Reggio Calabria.
