Global Hitachi Group Product & Services Hitachi Group Corporate Information

Joining Hitachi Rail fresh from University in 2014, I had no idea just how much my career was set to evolve. I was stepping into a small but ambitious engineering team of around 15 people in the UK. It felt like the perfect opportunity. A growing company, a chance to learn, and the exciting prospect of being involved in cutting-edge rail technology.

From the outset, I could also see how deeply Hitachi Rail valued its place in the North East. Drawing on the region’s world-leading expertise, the company was investing heavily not just in technology, but also in people - building skills, offering training, and strengthening the local workforce for the future.

Starting Out

Sometimes, the smallest moments can change the course of your career. For me, it was a conversation with Koji Agatsuma, Executive Director at Hitachi Rail, who I met while visiting Japan. I was fascinated by the country’s unique approach to technology and engineering, and as Koji shared insights into his work at Hitachi, I immediately felt energised by his passion.

When he recommended that I apply for an internship with Hitachi Rail, the wheels felt like they were already in motion.

Applying for the internship was a leap into the unknown, but from day one, I knew I had made the right decision. Working alongside experienced professionals, I was exposed to real-world engineering challenges that pushed me to think critically and adapt quickly.

Adapting to Change

One of the most exciting parts of working at Hitachi Rail has been witnessing first hand our transformation and growth. When I joined, it was a relatively small operation in the UK. Over time, it grew into a much larger organisation, integrating with companies like Hitachi Rail Italy.

The shift from a small, close-knit team to a larger, more structured company meant adapting to new ways of working. At times, it was daunting, but it also reinforced the importance of flexibility and resilience. The more I embraced these changes, the more I realised how much they were helping me grow, both as an engineer and as a professional.

Finding my Passion in Battery Technology

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work on a variety of projects, but one area that truly excites me is the future of sustainable transport.

The railway industry has come a long way in 200 years, and I believe we’re at a pivotal moment where technology can make an even greater impact. At Hitachi, we’re developing solutions that push the boundaries of what’s possible, from discontinuous electrification to battery-powered trains that reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

One of my proudest achievements was contributing to the UK’s first intercity battery train trial, right here in the North of England. It’s amazing to think that as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway, Hitachi Rail is continuing the North East’s proud tradition of rail innovation - investing in new green technologies that will shape the next 200 years of transport.

Looking Ahead

From the early days of learning the ropes to now working on projects that have real-world impact, my journey at Hitachi Rail has been nothing short of transformative.

For anyone considering a career in engineering – especially in the rail industry – my advice would be to embrace every opportunity to learn and challenge yourself. You might start as an intern, and end up being part of one of the most exciting areas of rail innovation there is.
