Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)Manages the functional department providing the overall systems design for both projects and bids. This includes the development and management of requirement specifications and designs at the system / subsystem level. The department is also responsible for operational analysis including system performance and data preparation for the system databases including guideway data. Maintains the development process for the systems design and requirements development. Provide technical advice to the Director, Systems Engineering on all technical issues. Appoints, trains and directs the system design leads.
Major challenges to face and issues to be resolved:
Maintains and develops the process for Systems Design and Requirements Management.
Handling of frequent, unexpected, technical problems in a timely manner.
Ensure the technical designs comply with customer specification/requirements at the lowest risk to the company.
Ensure that existing designs are used and reapplied in order to ensure technical solutions with minimum risk, and maximum bene
Key Accountabilities:
Managers are responsible to create a Performance Driven organization and Culture. They will assess, measure and reward accountability and efficiency. All leaders will continue to develop and improve our key talent. Managers will ensure SMART and quantitative objectives are set and are responsible to engage in and action all elements of the HR Cycle including Talent Review, Succession Planning, Professional Development Discussion and Training initiatives within their teams. Managers are accountable to ensure all actions from the performance driven activities are developed and progressed. As part of their key function, they are responsible to ensure consistency between work demand and capacity within their portfolio through smart task assignments. They will continue to drive the one team spirit within the Urban Rail Signaling domain, will manage team growth and address labor forecast challenges.
Management
Develops, trains and motivates Systems Design resources to ensure that adequate and qualified staff is available to perform and/or lead the design/requirements developments for the project/products, including acceptance requirements.
Provides a professional, dynamic, cooperative and high achieving work environment for the staff.
Sets meaningful and challenging objectives for staff.
For the professional development of staff within the department
For the creation and management of the department training plan
For the appointment and mentoring of leads / work package managers within the department
Direct hiring / firing responsibility for all staff in the department
Establish and maintain a structured Systems Design process in accordance to industry norms, Customer requirements and best practices
Coaches the system design leads on technical, management and leadership.
Responsible for medium and long term resource planning / allocation
For schedule and budgets related to the system design, operations and DCS work packages allocated to the department’s leads or work package managers.
Maintaining good internal relationships and communication with the consumers of the systems design including software, hardware, safety and verification and validation
Technical
Provide technical marketing support and review of technical specifications. Assist marketing in the preparation of technical proposals and budgets as related to marketing proposals.
Ensures that our processes support the delivery of safe and high-quality systems.
Provides root-cause analysis on failures and updates the process accordingly.
Ensuring the systems design is communicated and understood by the downstream teams.
Represents the company at technical committees, as may be required.
Keep abreast of technical development in the railway signalling field both within and outside of the company.
Maximizes product re-use and ensures correct re-use.
Safety
Creating and maintaining a work environment where product safety is paramount, promoting the safety culture among the staff.
Ensuring that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects
Key Requirements
10+ years of technical/project experience in critical control systems.
B.Sc. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or equivalent.
Detailed knowledge of Railway Operating Rules and practices.
The Project System Specialist and Systems Specialists are the technical focal point on a project design and must resolve all design issues, problems, questions and conflicts in the entire system. This requires frequent handling of new and unusual issues.
Provides them technical support and develops the process for Systems Design.
Good technical writing skills and good interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Rail / Signaling industry
