We are looking for a Manager, Hardware Solutions to join our Hardware team in Toronto!

The successful candidate will manage a group of skilled Hardware Compliance (EMC & Environmental) Engineers and Hardware Project Leads/Work Package Managers focused on the Hardware Embedded & Middleware Engineering of Hitachi Rail SRS projects their implementation and delivery of Hardware Artifacts.

Managers are responsible to create a Performance Driven organization and Culture.

They will assess, measure and reward accountability and efficiency. All leaders will continue to develop and improve our key talent. Managers will ensure SMART and quantitative objectives are set and are responsible to engage in and action all elements of the HR Cycle including Talent Review, Succession Planning, Professional Development Discussion and Training initiatives within their teams. Managers are accountable to ensure all actions from these performance driven activities are developed and progressed. As part of their key function, they are responsible to ensure consistency between work demand and capacity within their portfolio through smart task assignments. They will continue to drive the one team spirit within the Urban Rail Signalling domain, will manage team growth and address labour forecast challenges.

  • Manages employees; assigns tasks, motivates, trains and appraises employees’ performance and acts as a mentor
  • Plans, organizes, directs and centralizes activities of the department through Project Leads/Work package Managers, ensuring the effectiveness of the department, regardless of external and internal pressures
  • Monitors, Reviews and approves workload to ensure schedules are being adhered to
  • Assigns work in the area of control, resolving any technical or human resource problems
  • Works closely with the Senior Manager (HW Solutions) to manage technical direction of the groups, ensuring that this direction is in keeping with the company’s long term strategic and technical plan
  • Participates in design reviews ensuring the soundness of the Hardware architectural work for new project development and deployment
  • Assists Senior Manager, Bids Lead & Director in strategic and long-term business planning, cost estimates, and is responsible for labour forecasting and adherence to capital and expense budgets
  • Ensures that company Procedures and Implementation Standards are adhered to
  • Prepares department internal/external training plan and is responsible to execute this plan in conjunction with individual Training Requirement forms and Human Resources.
  • Maintains effective interface between both senior management and department staff, facilitating the continued flow of communications between all levels. Keeps middle and senior management fully informed on group activities. Communicates company strategy to the group
  • Conducts meetings with other departments and/or customers on contractual requirements, ensuring product and integrity of work are maintained and ensure that product development can be reused across projects
  • To provide for Project Planning and Re-planning, including the preparation of estimates, schedules, estimates to complete, work breakdown structures and test Plans
  • To maintain Project Tracking by monitoring performance against budget and schedule, performance metrics collection and interpretation, and weekly reporting supported by Group Leads
  • To perform early risk identification and mitigation through corrective actions
  • Participates in the preparation of bid estimates, capital budgets, operating budgets, department training plans, labour forecasting, facilities planning and tools acquisition

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, System Engineering, or a closely related field
  • 10+ years of proven experience in the Rail Industry, in a HW or HW Compliance position
  • Knowledge of railway signaling technologies, including SelTrac CBTC
  • 5+ years in management/supervisory position having managed and coordinated internal teams
  • Strong concrete experience of railway CENELEC & AREMA standards, especially HW related
  • Excellent planning skills
  • Ability to interface with important customer leadership and project leadership
  • Must be able to communicate clearly complex situations to different stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Knowledgeable of the hardware and embedded middleware engineering development processes
  • Knowledge of HW development tools
  • Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent customer service experience
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Professional Engineer's (P. Eng.) License
