Challenge
Thailand's rail network is undergoing a significant transformation to modernize its infrastructure, enhance operating capacities, and improve safety. The government aims to increase capacity, speed, and safety, particularly in the Bangkok metropolitan area, which faces heavy road traffic.
Solution
Hitachi Rail implemented the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 on the Red Line, Thailand's first high-capacity urban rapid transit system. The project included designing, constructing and installing electronic and mechanical railway systems, including signals and switches. The trackside equipment featured a combination of station-central and decentralized LEUs, specially adapted to fit to local conditions. The ETCS Onboard System was installed in 25 new EMUs supplied by Hitachi Rail from Japan as well as retrofitted on two old diesel vehicles.
Impact
The successful implementation of ETCS Level 1 on the Red Line has significantly improved operational efficiency, safety, and capacity. The system has been running smoothly since its commissioning in November 2021, with no failures reported. This modernization effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance Thailand's rail infrastructure, making it a model for other Southeast Asian countries.
