Challenge

Since the early 1990s, Spain has been heavily investing in its high-speed rail network, which is now the second longest in the world after China. Currently, two out of three Spaniards have access to high-speed rail. The aim is to increase this accessibility so that nine out of ten citizens live within 30km of a high-speed station.

2800km of lines, including 1,580km with ETCS

Hitachi Rail has partnered closely with Spanish railways since the early 1990s, and today has fitted more than 2800km of lines with its technology, including 1,580km with ETCS. Hitachi Rail's local teams continue to maintain the system and export their expertise into other markets.

Impact

Carries more than 85,000 passengers a day and connecting 34 cities. Average speed 248km/h - a 160% increase. In the first 25 years, it is estimated that savings of more than 12.9 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, with 100% of energy coming from renewable sources.
